Jason “GQ Magazine” Soaris

GQ Jason

Jason "GQ" Soaris

I got a question in yesterday asking how I created the photo of Jason Soaris… They wanted more clarity for how I created it.

“The image was just crisp, stunning and a subtle sexy. The lighting was soft and just ohh soo pro… How do I light like that?” – J. Serra, Los Angeles

Here’s the answer J. Serra (who’s full name will be kept low of course): You start with a large soft light-source overhead. I used a 48″ octabox from eBay in a 440 watt Britek HS-2000 flash. Then I placed a second flash for the solid gray background next too it (on an overhead boom) aimed at the BG (background) using only a 7″ reflector. I finished it off with 2 4×8ft foamcore boards in front on both sides of the subject. (You can see the twin rectangles in the catch-lights of the subjects eyes as proof.)

By the way, I shoot with Jason from time to time. He commissioned me to create some images for him and his cousin that resembled GQ magazine (see previous post). Viola!!!
